A Genealogical Expedition
On 4/1/14 my brother John and I undertook a walking tour of Brooklyn from DUMBO to Red Hook. Our journey started in Long Island City where we took the East River Ferry to the Brooklyn Bridge Park. After touring the park our journey started in Brooklyn Heights and proceeded through Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, where Charles and Isabelle lived and our father, Joseph and his brother, our Uncle, Charles, was born. Our trip ended in Red Hook where Peter Tague our Great, Great Grandfather spent the last 8 years of his life working the Red Hook waterfront as a Tug Boat Captain, in a 19th century version of "On the Waterfront". Peter helped steer cargo ships to port where they were unloaded by nets. As the story goes he moved there from Port Ewen on the Hudson after his wife Ann died in 1886, more than likely to be closer to his children who were living there already. Brooklyn was not even part of New York City yet .....not until 1898. Peter died in Bellevue Hospital in 1894 and was taken back to Kingston, NY, across the Rondout from Port Ewen, to be buried at St. Mary's Cemetery. See full story in the "Grandfather Biographies" under Charles Tague.
