Children Growing up in the Late 19th Century
Story by Jon Grinspan: NY Times 6/1/14
Dinner with your children in 19th-century America often required some self-control. Berry stains in your daughter’s hair? Good for her. Raccoon bites running up your boy’s arms? Bet he had an interesting day.As this year’s summer vacation begins, many parents contemplate how to rein in their kids. But there was a time when Americans pushed in the opposite direction, preserved in Mark Twain’s cat-swinging scamps. Parents back then encouraged kids to get some wildness out of their system, to express the republic’s revolutionary values.
American children of the 19th century had a reputation. Returning British visitors reported on American kids who showed no respect, who swore and fought, who appeared — at age 10 — “calling for liquor at the bar, or puffing a cigar in the streets,” as one wrote. There were really no children in 19th-century America, travelers often claimed, only “small stuck-up caricatures of men and women.”

This is the classic of all classics. A Genealogy "who's who" for the Tague family. A true "who's who" now that all of the "elders" have passed. One could argue that at some point we could of identified all in this pic. Hmmm, too late now :) Who is getting married here? Who are all these people? Well we are fairly certain that the man on the far left is our Grandfather Charles. Charles married Isabelle so who is the woman clutching his arm? Not Isabelle! Who is getting married?
We would like to believe that most of the people in this pic are the children of John C Tague, our Great Grandfather....... including the one getting married. However John C had 9 children, of which were 3 sons. There are 4 males in this pic. So! is it possible that there are friends here? Of course. There has been speculation that the woman on the far right is Isabelle. I completely disagree with this notion. The face is just not Isabelle. My brother disagrees. What do you think. Please go to the "Tague Genealogy Brain Teasers" page and vote.
